Jail Bird
Adopted after serving time at a local women’s prison!
THIS STORY STARTS ON … A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT…
Dakotah’s mom was found wandering the streets of Cleveland during one of their famous snow storms. She was freezing and starving from weeks of neglect and hardships. It took a while to convince her that she had found a friend in the kind gentleman that was trying to rescue her. Finally, due to weakness and starvation she let the man pick her up and put her in his warm car. She was immediately taken to the Cleveland APL where they soon discovered that she was pregnant. Thankfully, the Cleveland APL had started a program where prisoners in a local women’s prison were trained to care for dogs that were rescued until they were ready to be adopted. She was sent to this local prison where she could have her pups and enjoy some time out of the shelter until the puppies were old enough to be adopted. Since puppies are not vaccinated until a certain age/weight it is very dangerous for them to reside in a shelter. At the prison they are not around other dogs and the risk of them becoming infected is low. The prisoners feed them, socialize them and eventually through their loving care the dogs are able to recover from their usually harrowing journeys.
Within hours of arriving 4 pups were born. Dakotah and her 3 other litter mates stayed at the prison until they were 8 weeks old. They were then taken to the vet for their shots and spay/neuter surgeries. Next stop was a rescue event where the dogs would be put up for adoption. Dakotah and all three siblings were adopted within hours of arriving at the event. Dakotah’s mom was also adopted by a lovely young couple from the Cleveland APL.
Dakotah is now living the good life. Her forever family describes her as a wonderful spunky dog who can easily jump about six feet up in the air and absolutely LOVES to play outside in the water. Chasing the hose is her favorite activity. She now has a “little” Golden Retriever brother. She couldn’t be happier.
They couldn’t imagine life without her!
AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
